Recently, I got a new project assignment that requires to connect permanently to the customer's network through VPN. They are using a so-called SSL VPN. As I am using since more than 5 years within my company's network I was quite curious about their solution and how it would actually be different from OpenVPN. Well, short version: It is a disguised version of OpenVPN. Unfortunately, the company only offers a client for Windows and Mac OS which shouldn't bother any Linux user after all. OpenVPN is part of every recent distribution and can be activated in a couple of minutes - both client as well as server (if necessary). WatchGuard Firebox SSL - About dialog Borrowing some files from a Windows client installation Initially, I didn't know about the product, so therefore I went through the installation on Windows 8. No obstacles (and no restart despite installation of TAP device drivers!) here and the secured VPN channel was up and running in less than 2 minutes or so. Much appreciated from both parties - customer and me. Of course, this whole client package and my long year approved and stable installation ignited my interest to have a closer look at the WatchGuard client. Compared to the original OpenVPN client (okay, I have to admit this is years ago) this commercial product is smarter in terms of file locations during installation. You'll be able to access the configuration and key files below your roaming application data folder. To get there, simply enter '%AppData% WatchGuard Mobile VPN' in your Windows/File Explorer and confirm with Enter/Return. This will display the following files. Application folder below user profile with configuration and certificate files From there we are going to borrow four files, namely: • ca.crt • client.crt • client.ovpn • client.pem and transfer them to the Linux system. Ssh client download. RBrowser provides an easy way to manage and edit your HTML pages on the directly on the remote WEB host. Backup your important files using the Folder Sync Engine in RBrowser! RBrowser provides connectivity with FTP and SFTP. Maintain your web pages and sync the changes with a single click! You might also be able to isolate those four files from a Mac OS client. Frankly, I'm just too lazy to run the WatchGuard client installation on a Mac mini only to find the folder location, and I'm going to describe why a little bit further down this article. I know that you can do that! Feedback in the comment section is appreciated. Update #1: One of the reader (zer0Sum) provided the path information to retrieve the necessary files on a Mac OS system: /Users/[user]/Library/WatchGuard/Mobile VPN/ Thanks! Update #2: Retrieve the information directly from the WatchGuard Firebox as described in the next paragraph. Get the client configuration file from the WatchGuard Firebox Due to a replacement unit at my customer, I had to update all the certificates here on the client side, too. And as I already changed my main machine I wouldn't like to install the Windows Client software on this computer. Actually, it is not necessary because the certificates can be downloaded from the appliance directly. In order to do this, open your web browser and enter the following URL: Note: I changed the IP address of the remote directive above (which should be obvious, right?). This will give you a login dialog like so: Login into the WatchGuard Firebox to get the Mobile VPN with SSL Client information Enter your credentials given by your network administrator and you will be able to download various client information. This is the regular 'Mobile VPN with SSL client' area: Download the Mobile VPN with SSL Client Profile directly from the WatchGuard appliance We simply ignore the software for Windows and Mac and choose to download the client profile. Save the provided file 'client.ovpn' to a location on your computer. Now, you can open it with a text editor like Notepad++. Interestingly, the different certificates are stored inside the OpenVPN client configuration file. So, either you leave it as-is or you might consider to cut the certificates from the file and store them as individual files. Both approaches will work. Source: Configuration of OpenVPN (console) Depending on your distribution the following steps might be a little different but in general you should be able to get the important information from it. I'm going to describe the steps in 13.04 (Raring Ringtail). Watchguard Mobile Vpn ClientFor IPSec VPN connections from a Mac OSX device, you can also use the WatchGuard IPSec VPN Client for Mac OSX. For more information, see Install the IPSec Mobile VPN Client Software. For an iOS device, you can install the WatchGuard Mobile VPN app for iOS. VPN Tracker is the leading Apple Mac VPN client and compatible with almost all IPSec VPN, L2TP VPN and PPTP VPN gateways (Try VPN Tracker for free). Please refer to the following table to find out if the VPN Tracker team has already successfully tested VPN Tracker with your WatchGuard VPN gateway.

Email clients come in all shapes and sizes, but when it comes to the options available on the Mac, we feel that Airmail is the best email client for most people. How can the answer be improved? If you don’t have a Mac, or don’t know what SVN is, please accept my apologies for this very directed post. To the one guy remaining, rejoice: For the longest time, there has been no good SVN interface available on the Mac. Windows folks had TortoiseSVN, and Linux folks wouldn’t be caught dead using anything other than command line tools (or, git, for that matter). Command Line Svn UpdateSo, everybody was happy but us Mac folks. A program called “Versions” has been available for a while, but it, sadly, epitomizes the style over substance sin that is so prevalent on the Mac. It’s got a beautiful interface, but it’s an interface to very little. Namely, it doesn’t support merging or branching, which is pretty much the most important reason for using a versioning system like SVN. If you’re not branching and merging, you might as well just use a good backup system, because that’s pretty much all you’re using SVN for at that point. So, I was very excited to find “Cornerstone,” which was recently upgraded to support the slickest SVN interface I’ve seen on any platform. Nerocode SQLWave is a MySQL GUI Client tool designed to automate and simplify the database development process. It also provides an easier way to explore and maintain existing databases, design compound SQL statements, query and manipulate data in different ways. For something that plays nice with MySQL on macOS or Windows, check out TeamSQL — TeamSQL is a cross-platform data client that works with multiple database environments, including PostgreSQL, Redis, Redshift, and MS SQL Server. It’s as pretty as “Versions” and as powerful (if not moreso) than TortoiseSVN. It’s merge facility is the best approach I’ve seen, for example. It’s intuitive, and as you adjust the settings it automatically performs a trial merge and gives you the results in real time. They have a, which is more than enough to get a feel for the product, it’s so simple and well-executed. (By the way, they aren’t giving me anything for this. I wish they were, but I don’t have that kind of juice.) This entry was posted in, and tagged, on. Post navigation. Xcode has a built-in SVN client which is merely okay. Some people seem to like SvnX, but I've not been happy with its user interface. But here's a different idea: unless you have some specific reason to stick with SVN and ONLY SVN, you could try Git. Git comes with a few GUI tools (which are invoked from the command line), and you can continuously integrate between Git and SVN repositories with very little effort. Best Svn Client For MacThe Git branching model is also especially fantastic for collaboration, although even for single-person projects I like it much more than SVN, as it gives me a lot more flexibility in how I manage and release my projects. There are also a number of fantastic GUIs for Git on OS X, many of them free, and I believe Xcode supports git directly now, too. Discuss email privately. Along with Google, it also supports other major email providers. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been desperately in need of a solid email client on my Mac for years. The Mail app that comes preinstalled with macOS Sierra or earlier just doesn’t do it for me, and I’ve been using Airmail for a couple years too. It’s an improvement over the stock offering, but for the price it never felt like it reached its potential. At long last, my favorite mail app for iPhone and iPad has arrived on the Mac: Spark. Spark by Readdle (the makers of PDF Expert 5 ) calls itself the “smart email client that solves a problem of an overwhelmed inbox.” In my one week of beta testing the Mac app plus about a year using the iOS app, I can declare it lives up to the mantra. Spark’s Smart Inbox Tidies Up the Mess Spark’s signature feature is its Smart Inbox. Jaqy A universal JDBC command line client with lots of features. MacOS GUI Clients Open Source / Free Software Postbird Open source, desktop application to manage your local or remote PostgreSQL databases. Gui based sql client for mac. It is not specific to PostgreSQL, but it is pre-configured to handle PostgreSQL servers. Requires PostgreSQL JDBC driver. While traditional email clients just present all your new emails at once, Spark sorts through the new stuff and organizes them into cards. New, personal emails are at the top, followed by notifications, newsletters, your pinned read emails and the rest of your inbox. This alone dramatically saves me time as I can quickly click and swipe through emails this way. Email Client For The MacPlus, the emails come from all linked accounts. Spark has quick action gestures that are completely customizable in the Preferences. By default, a left swipe lets you mark an item as unread or archive it (long left swipe) and a right swipe lets you delete or pin it (long right swipe.) So in just a few gestures I can clear through all my newsletters without even thinking about it. Like, Spark also has a snooze feature. It lets you deal with emails later on so that they reappear in your inbox when the timing is more appropriate. By default you can snooze an email for later today (in three hours), tomorrow morning, next week or pick any date. Choose Someday and the email won’t have an assigned date, it’ll just stay in the Snoozed folder. Email Client For GmailEM client is one of the best clients that a lot of people use. The main advantage of this email client is that it has a very clean interface. It also organizes all your emails in a proper manner. This email client has two version for use out of which one is free and the other is a paid version. With the free version, you can create up to two email ids. Discuss email privately. Invite teammates to discuss specific email and threads. Ask questions, get answers, and keep everyone in the loop. The new Spark feels like the first product that may finally solve email communication and assignments for the MacStories team. Again, all of these time and date options are customizable. Other Key Features While Smart Inbox plus gestures and snooze are highlights, they aren’t the only features Spark has going for it. Smart notifications cleverly omit strangers and automated messages from your notifications, leaving only the important senders. These are enabled on a per-account basis, so some accounts can have smart notifications, some can have all notifications and others can have none. It’s up to you. Another useful feature though limited in its functionality is quick replies. |
